Discrimination and Advocacy

This course is aimed at people who would like to gain an introduction to discrimination and advocacy. It provides an overview of current policy and legislation and highlights some of the key developments in these areas. It explores how discrimination happens and looks at how concepts such as discrimination, prejudice and oppression are interlinked. The course is participatory and allows people to share their experiences and understandings of the key areas of discrimination, which include race, gender, sexuality and disability.   It looks at the roles of equal opportunity, human rights and advocacy in tackling discrimination.

Aims:
 
Understand the concept of discrimination and how policies have been designed to tackle this issue. Understand the area of advocacy, who needs it and why?
 
 
Objectives:
 
  • Define and identify differences between discrimination, stereotyping, prejudice, oppression and harassment
  • Discuss how these concepts impact on one another
  • Discuss how and why these concepts happen
  • Explain the difference between direct and indirect discrimination 
  • Explain and discuss different types of discrimination
  • Outline the main policies that have been put into place to tackle discrimination
  • Discuss how these policies impact on discrimination and highlight any issues
  • Describe what is meant by equal opportunities
  • Identify the impact of Human Rights on discrimination
  • Define advocacy and list its different stands
  • Discuss the purpose of commissions and their benefits
  • Highlight what else can be done

8th Annual Regional Warden Conference for Yorkshire & The Humber (March 2010)
This conference was the 8th Annual Regional Warden Conference to be organised and facilitated by the Neighbourhood Training and Resource Centre.
