Community Engagement

 
This two day course is an introduction to community engagement and has been designed for anyone who works directly in neighbourhoods, especially those who have an interest in community engagement or a role in developing and involving communities. 
 
The course provides an overview of community engagement within the context of neighbourhood renewal and examines this in relation to different levels of involvement. It explores the benefits and challenges of using the more traditional means, whilst advocating the use of participatory methods as an effective community engagement option. The course provides learners with a range of participatory tools and provides the opportunity for learners to practice these whilst comparing them with traditional methods.
 
Aims:
 
To understand why providers of services need to interact and engage with the communities they serve and to explore different ways of doing this within neighbourhood renewal. To examine how to engage effectively via an exploration of barriers that exist and solutions provided by participatory methods.
 
Objectives:
 
  • Define what community means in the context of neighbourhood renewal
  • List the benefits and challenges faced by organisations when considering to engage with communities they serve
  • List the different levels of involvement and where this fits within community development and neighbourhood renewal.
  • Discuss the different ways and barriers that exist when engaging with the community in relation to levels of involvement, this will include:
    • Informing people – leaflets, newsletters, notice, IT solutions
    • Consulting people – one-to-one surveys, forums, meetings, IT solutions
    • Taking decisions and working together – meetings, participation, volunteering
    • Handing over control – handing over power, participation, volunteering
  • Define participation and empowerment in the context of neighbourhood renewal and list barriers to participation
  • Review participatory methods as a means of engaging with people
  • Practice different participatory methods of engaging with communities by exploring a range of different tools
  • Compare participatory approaches against more traditional means of engagement

This conference was the 8th Annual Regional Warden Conference to be organised and facilitated by the Neighbourhood Training and Resource Centre.
