Introduction to Community Cohesion

This workshop will be delivered by Adriana Paxton, the Community Cohesion Manager for Goodwin Development Trust, in Hull. The Community Cohesion project in Hull was set up in 2007 as a response to the demographic changes, acute need for cultural integration of BME groups and in response to the increasing need for creating better understanding of other cultures and inter cultural dialogue.

The project successfully recruited and trained over 150 volunteers from BME groups, provides English classes and cultural integration courses 6 days a week to over 600 students, and also runs three information desks across the city.

The workshop will cover the project background and the successful strategies the project used in attaining community cohesion such as volunteering, training, development, social networks, and events in a city with 70 different nationalities. The workshop will also look at the barriers to cohesion and how they can be overcome, the contextual challenges for cohesion and the practical aspects of promoting and maintaining community cohesion.

 Aims:

To explore the benefits of community cohesion and the challenges faced when implanting cohesion within a community. To investigate practical solutions for promoting and maintaining community cohesion.

Objectives:

  • Define community cohesion
  • List the benefits of community cohesion
